Catalina left the bed with a sated smile on her face.

“That was the somethin’ I won’t be forgettin’ soon and I have you two to thank for it!” she said, reaching for her clothes. She had never been one to dally after sex and Ruth Anne knew it.

“I ain’t got words for what just happened,” Jackson said, apparently still reeling from the experience.

Ruth Anne only beamed and reached for her clothes too. In another minute, they were all dressed.

“I will go make coffee,” she said and left the room.

Catalina knew what her friend was up to having left so Catalina could question Jackson and get to the bottom of the accusations against him.

“It's about time I know more about what happened to you earlier. I know you aren't a thief, but about this holdup?" she asked reasonably.

Jackson shook his head in confusion.

“The stage wasn’t held up, Catalina. I didn’t see a soul all the way from Gillespie to Alamieda,” he told her.

“Then you should have done admitted you left the coach unguarded,” she said in return.

“But I didn’t. There was no reason to.”

"Look, Jackson, you can come clean with me. You delivered a chest full of rocks."

Catalina knew there was something going on. Either Jackson was lying to her which she highly doubted or something else entirely was going on. Either way, this had been dropped on her doorstep literally when the pursuit had entered Cedar Ledge and she was going to get to the bottom of it.

Jackson was about to say something when Ruth flew in, horror on her face.

“There is somebody outside, Cattie. They're coming in!” Ruth said urgently.

Her words were promptly followed by the sound of someone pounding on the door of the little cabin. Frowning, Catalina turned towards the door and raced out of the bedroom followed by the other just as the front door flew open and the posse barged into the cabin with guns in hand.

"Ah Hah! Didn't I say?" Kincaid beamed like the rogue he was. "When we searched the big ranch house and didn’t find them there or in the bunkhouses, I told you that they had to be somewhere on the property, didn’t I?” he finished triumphantly.

“Yep, it’s just like we figured, boys. There is the mangy thief now. Grab him!” Percival said.

Ruth Anne began crying softly, holding tight to Jackson.

“Buck up, Ruth Anne. Tears won’t help and I am sure that the sheriff will make sure that Jackson gets a fair trial,” Catalina told her friend.

The words were not for Ruth Anne alone. She was also telling the sheriff to do his duty or else … The man stared at her silently, getting her message.

“I don’t care if your daddy is a judge!” Drummond turned to her angrily. "I always figured a place like this would be a den of iniquity. I done heard everything that goes on with you bunch of half-breeds. I especially heard stories about you, missy. Your kind belongs in a madhouse. Maybe I'll make it my business to see you find your way to one of them after this one is convicted.
